Three-Dimensional Beauty

The Volumetric Facelift Brings New Finesse to Facial Rejuvenation

The facelifts of yesteryear focused on pulling, not restoring. They stretched tissues up and back, producing a tight, flattened look.

This created an unnatural stretch of skin along the cheek and jaw that told the world, “This face has been lifted.” What a disaster. I’m convinced many women went without a facelift out of fear of being left with this “Nike swoop.”

Plastic surgeons have worked hard over the last two decades to create a more natural kind of facial rejuvenation. I’m happy to say that I offer a nuanced, three-dimensional facial restoration that I call a Volumetric Facelift.

Combination Therapy

The Volumetric Facelift is actually made up of three separate methodologies. It’s based on the idea that youthful faces have volume in specific areas that give them their aesthetically pleasing shape. The Volumetric Facelift uses three separate techniques to achieve this restoration of volume.

  • Repositioning of the deeper facial tissues
  • Implants
  • Fat transfers

When used in combination, they can create a level of facial rejuvenation that far surpasses what could be achieved with the old-fashioned pullback technique.

Repositioning Facial Tissues
In recent years we’ve perfected products and techniques for performing something we call a midface lift. We restore the natural curves and fullness of the cheeks by moving soft tissues back to where they were earlier. This is done by elevating the soft cheek tissue, repositioning it upward towards the eyes, and fixating it in place until it re-adheres naturally to the bone. This restores cheek volume and results in a natural, revitalized appearance.

A midface suspension can do more than add fullness to the midface. If your lower eyelids are puffy with dark circles underneath, or have a “hollowed out” look, a midface suspension can sometimes work better than lower eyelid surgery to correct your problem.

Or if your smile lines have deepened, you may want to think about a midface suspension before going for your next Restylane or Botox treatment. Your results will be more encompassing, and you won’t be saddled with the need to schedule refresher injections every four to six months.

Implants
The "pillars" of the face--chin, cheekbones, and jaw lines—tend to shrink or lose definition at midlife. Today we can restore these features to an earlier time, using a variety of volumetric implants.

This technique allows us to re-sculpt the face with those classic qualities that result in a more photogenic look. We’ve been so successful with these that many patients are coming in long before they need a facelift, requesting this as a standalone procedure to correct inadequacies they see in their bone structure. Using these implants, the average face can be made exceptional.

Another benefit of the procedure is that it is reversible. The implants can easily be removed if you don’t like the effect or want to modify them. But removal of the implants is rare because patients are usually thrilled with their results.

Fat Transfers or Fat Grafting
Facial fat replenishing is another technology that’s come of age in recent years. Fat is used much the same way Restylane, Radiesse and other artificial fillers are used, but in my opinion it’s superior to all of them. Fat has a better texture and is easier to work with. It can be placed deep, for true volume replacement. It's safe, whereas the problems associated with longer-term fillers remain a question mark.

By taking fat from areas of your body where you don’t want it and re-injecting it into your face, we can add volume in strategic areas such as the lips, nasolabial folds (mouth to nose folds), under eyes, cheeks, chin, jaw line, temples, etc.  This is a very exciting procedure as it is not invasive but does create a youthful look.

A Palette of Techniques
With this palette of new techniques the facelift has become a multidimensional undertaking, not just an attempt to remove sagging skin and tighten muscle. Now we ask our facelift patients to come with photographs of themselves at a younger age to use as a guide as we plan your procedure, mapping the areas that need volume, aiming for a nuanced, younger version of your face.

What you get is you at your ageless best – natural-looking and rested.
